Beatitudes: Peacemakers
Beatitudes: Peacemakers
Matthew 5:9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.”
Often misunderstood is the concept of a “peacemaker”. In our world today, there are too many who proclaim peace at any cost. There are churches who, for the sake of peace, allow heresy and false doctrine within their fellowships and even denominations. All the while proclaiming themselves to be peacemakers. But that is far from what Jesus was talking about when he referred to “peacemakers”.
A peacemaker, according to the Greek term, is one who “bravely declares God’s terms which makes someone whole”. God’s terms always have been and always will be repentance.
A peacemaker is one who rejects the notion of seeking vengeance upon someone for a wrong that was done to them. But that doesn’t mean that they approve of the wrong. Instead, they leave the vengeance up to God (Romans 12:19) and seek to have the person repent and be reconciled.
A person can never be whole who lives in sin. There will always be a gap between them and God. The Apostle James referred to sin as being a “friend of the world” in James 4:4, “to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.”
It is the peacemaker who declares to God’s enemy what God requires. A peacemaker is not a negotiator but a reconciler. As a peacemaker, you fill the ministry that Christ left for us of reconciling man to God, “for He gave us the ministry of reconciliation” (2 Corinthians 5:18).
We become peacemakers when we lovingly share the truth of God with those who are in sin in order that they may be reconciled to God through the repentance of their sins and their faith in His Son Jesus. Being a peacemaker is a tough role because you are standing firm against a tidal wave of opposition from the world. That is exactly what the Son of God did. When we are peacemakers like Him, we become blessed because God lovingly declares that we, too, are His sons.
These are your Words for Wednesday.
We are having a virtual Egg Hunt this coming Sunday afternoon from 3:30 until 4:00. If you can volunteer some time, this will be a great way to engage people about their relationship with God and invite them to church. I hope you have a great rest of your week!
In Christ,
Kevin
