Overwhelmed

Overwhelmed
I wear multiple hats that include a third grade teacher, a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a daughter, and a friend. For many years, I’ve been praying to be overwhelmed by God instead of being overwhelmed by my circumstances, particularly when it comes to work. I’m reminded of the song “Overwhelmed” by Big Daddy Weave. Some of the lines are: “I see the work of Your hands…I delight myself in you, in the Glory of your Presence. I’m overwhelmed, I’m overwhelmed by You.”
God is working on answering my prayer, but not in the way I imagined. When timelines loomed and expectations seemed impossible to meet, I usually focused on the work of His hands. I would stop to think about each blade of grass, each grain of sand, and each tree in a forest. I thanked God for His creations. His creations are incredible, but He is not only the Creator. He is so much more.
His creations are overwhelming, but so is His presence. When I am overwhelmed by deadlines, lesson plans, and data sheets, I pray to be overwhelmed by God’s presence. In His presence, I find joy. I have to delight myself in Him no matter what is going on around me or how I feel. Psalm 37:4 says, “Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” He is my joy.
When I’m feeling overwhelmed by professional development courses, parent conferences, and what to fix for dinner, I have to remember that God leads me. I pray to be overwhelmed by His guidance. I am not in control. God is. I have to trust Him to lead me. Proverbs 3:5-6 states, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.” My circumstances are still the same, but God is my guide.
When I am feeling overwhelmed by report card comments, e-mails, and dirty dishes, I have to remember that God provides. He provides the strength I need if I trust Him, rely on Him, and ask Him. One of my favorite verses to remember when I am weak, is Philipians 4:13. “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” I have to rely on His provision.
Life and work expectations can still be completely and utterly overwhelming to me if I allow them to be. I’m continuing to pray that I would be overwhelmed by God and not by my circumstances. Second by second, minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day, God is leading and guiding me. I have to choose to focus on His presence, His guidance, and His provision. I have to choose to delight in Him. When I do that, He overwhelms me.
Those are your Words for Wednesday.
In His Love,
Sarah Knott
